Walker, Ferrara shine for Wellington Wrestling Club

Posted Sunday, October 18, 2009 by Gary Curreri (Sun Sentinel)
Junior Jake Ferrara and freshman Cody Walker of the Wellington Wrestling Club won championship medals at the Olympic Heights Open Oct. 3 at Olympic Heights High School.

The team brought many young wrestlers and finished with a 22-16 overall record. Wellington had a second-place finisher in sophomore Tim Skaryd, two third-place finishers in sophomore Justin Bergin and junior Mikolaj Wilga, and three fourth-place finishers in sophomore Eric Melmaed, freshman Kenny Nelson and sophomore Matt Philmus.

"This was a great tournament for us to get some experience before our high school season gets started on Oct. 26," coach Travis Gray said. "Cody Walker has set the Wellington Wrestling Club's all-time record [with] 35 off-season wins."

Gray will be leaning on Ferrara and Walker to carry the load this season. "Jake and Cody's results show that they will be two of the leaders at Wellington High School this year due to their work at our club and at off-season tournaments."

The Wellington Wrestling Club traveled to Lake Gibson High School recently to compete in a 10-team tournament that drew the top five teams in the state.

The Wellington Wrestling Club serves kids of all ages beginning with kindergartners. Club hours are from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday evenings for kindergarten kids through eighth-graders and 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday evenings for sixth through 12th grades.
